“Abuse of the LGBT rights.” Another critical issue discussed in the run-up to the Olympics was the condemnation of Russia for discrimination of the LGBT community (which, according to Western media, was expressed in the 2013 law implementing fines for promoting homosexuality among minors).

Questions on this issue were repeatedly raised at press conferences with Putin; he always responded in a rather restrained manner.

As expected, during the sports event there was not a single case of harassment of the LGBT community. The sole exception was the owner of a gay club in Sochi who complained that the Western journalists hammered him for over 200 interviews, interfering with the regular work of his club.[125]
